Okay the $500 dollar jeep? They bought a commanche. Thats great i love them, but not 2WD!! WTF? They did a story on a 2WD comanche? Why? We all like 4wheeling not 2wheeling? I will only respect that story if they turn it into a prerunner like you see the lifted 2WD Rangers etc at the dunes. at least they use em' I know i will piss some of you off or get some stupid comments from those who like to see their writings on the PC but dang what a waste. Why not show them putting a lift on a 4WD comanche i haven't seen a detailed story on a 4WD comanche in forever!! oh well what do i know...i'm just the consumer.

I thought it odd they did a story on a 2WD Comanche too, but I loved it none the less.  I love Comanches, have 2 '89s and neither are half as nice as the body on that one.  One of the perks of California I guess.

It would make a terrible pre runner, which also leads me to why I have no problem with this story.  I'm guessing ole Pete knows as well as I do that it's a bolt in conversion to change a Comanche (or Cherokee) from 2WD to 4WD.  The front axle is simply a pipe.  it's simply an axle without the pumpkin.  Ya follow?  also, the hole is already in the floor for the transfer case shifter, with only a bolt on plate covering it.  The plastic shifter boot housing already has the opening as well, with a pop out fill plate.

I say bad pre runner, cause 2WD IFS trucks make better pre runners than solid axle trucks.. but that's just my opinion.

Using a wrecked Cherokee, I had already swapped out the front axle in my good '89.  I just lack the case and rear shaft, since the donor Cherokee was an automatic and mine is a 5 speed.  I had the 2WD axle out, and the 4WD in place and ready to drive in less than 2 hours.  The only problem I found was using the cherokee's coils set the front end just a hair higher than the rear.  The rear axles on Cherokees are spring over, as well as the perches are closer together, so the donor's rear axle didn't work.  I have to change the axle gearing and shim the axle..  but a 6" all around lift is in order anyway.

I totally see him converting it, if it hasn't been already.

I guess i should have been clearer. If they keep it 2WD (as it is only his "commuter") He should lift it prerunner style at least so you could at least hit the dunes. Yeah i figured the cherokee would be easy bolt in, wouldn't that have been a better story tho than i have a 2wd commanche i made lights work and paint half shine, yeahhhhhh!

My opinion 2wd cherokees commanche etc who cares how they look etc give me a 4wd one man, dunes get boring.

Nahhh, it has a real axle in the front now. And yes, it bolts in. Regardless, the suspensions on the 2x and 4x are identical so it still applies to everyone. Get it? Cool T case and tranny swap soon.

So yeah that jeep is a piece of ####, not even a jeep. i c a jeep as in wranglers or something off roadable, but once again it seems as though JP has #### for a budget so thats the kind of crap we get to read about, how to make lights work, if i wanted to c pre-runners id buy off-road not JP. But if they showed me how BRIGHT the headlights work on BREE Id pay double! haha heres to reading about junk, and bitchy people that are gay and scared of looking @ something better than their hag of a wife.

You realize not everyone has the same taste in trucks etc. I think the ppl at this mag are just trying to show us readers that you can do different things and some readers mite just like that.

Ummm, so you wanna read a mag that is purely 1001-ways to build a Wrangler? Wow! You're even more opinionated than me.

Come on. There are way too many other models and ways to build them.

So it's a pre-runner. It will still crawl, hit the mud, haul ass and ride smooth down country dirt roads. You never do any of that in your Jeep? I'd be surprised.

Just a thought

Comanches, and Cherokees have just the same right to wear the Jeep badge as the all mighty Wrangler, though some could simply wear Dodge (like the Liberty).

They share the same running gear as the Wrangler, as far as motors, trans, transfer cases, and axles.  You could also get the topless Jeeps as 2 wheel drive.  If I really wanted to make a issue, the Cherokees and Comanches had coil sprung front axles so they had better articulation than their leaf sprung cousins, in stock form...until 1997.

Some look forward to future mods on the little MJ, to possibly give some ideas or inspiration on our own junk, which I think is the point of the mag.. at least one of them.

but while bitchin is goin on, what happened to that lil red CJ-8 y'all got from Collins Bro's?!

I say bring on more content for the other jeeps. Id love to see some tech on the liberties or even the new Commander. Sure I drive wrangler, but there is more to the scene than wranglers. Shoot just wheeled with a real nice MJ last weekend, and he tore it up. Worked very well with only a small lift, and add rocker guards and he would be set. Either way, its nice to see a build up that isn't high dollar and ultra bling. Bring on more real world tech.

As for what the editors were thinking, well thats hard to say sometimes.

What about a buildup of a ZJ Grand Cherokee?  They got the 8 cyl and great drive train, except the 4-all the time.  just a thought

Wow now, just wait second, there are other jeeps out there besides CJ-5/7/8? Must have gone through a time machine or something. I think you guys put way to much effort on all this new fangled gizmo stuff, like no leaf springs? come on who came up with that dumb idea, really now. Power steering conversion is another one of those things I dont understand, if it was good enough in 1971 then its still good now even if it hasn't been rebuilt in who knows how long. I for one agree with the magazines wide use of all things jeep. Sure I don't have a cherokee/commanche but hey someone does, maybe two people. I also dont have anything newer than 1981, but I still read the articles about them new looking pigtail springs they are using now adays. At the end of the day, its the experience of offroading, with friends, not that you did it in this jeep or that jeep.

p.s. just dont do anything with that concept thingy thats two wheel drive except for maybe jump it off the grand canyon.

as for zj stuff in the mags fourwheeler mag has been doing a bunch of stuff with their project grand. One thing was to swap out the always in 4x4 tranny..... would be nice to see more on the zj's for sure........
