I have a 78 CJ5 with an original 304 in it. I am planning on rebuilding the engine here very shortly. I would like to get around 300 hp or close to it. I know edelbrock offers intake, carb, and cam for it, and that I can get a 3 angle valve job done, but I was wondering whether I would need to change pistons, the stroke, crank or any other internal parts. I have no problems doing this myself so any info you can give me would be appreciated.

It may be cheaper and easier to get the power you want with an AMC 360 instead. With a intake cam and carb that should get you there. Motors mounts and bell housing are the same.

i need info on the vacuum lines of an amc 360. i had one rbuilt. it has an edelbrock intake without egr. i am putting it in a cj5 jeep. the jeep does not have power brakes. it does have manual tranny. are the only vacuum lines i will need are the pcv line and the crankk case line?

stock parts and compression will work fine, stay under 260 adv duration on the camshaft at around 112 degrees lobe center with .450 lift. if you get carried away with the cam it wont have any grunt down low. crower and crane cams make perfect camshafts for 4x4s, crower has what they call a baja beast at 258 adv on 110 lc that is about the best you will do without spending a pile of money. the 360 would be the best choice. edelbrock has some good combos also but stay away from the rpm stuff unless you're building a mud bogger that needs high rpm power. be sure to match the torque range of the intake with the cam. dual plane for lower rpm power. you probably won't get 300 but it will be respectable. ouch.. thats an old thread.
