The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. For those that wheel at night so does the moon. If you want backup, Wally World has compasses for under 5 bucks.

True.

But, what if there is more than one trail you can take, one leads to a cliff one leads home and it is getting dark with no moon out.

Or you have had such a fun day of trail hopping and need a reminder where the trail head is and you tow rig.

Or what if you are out in the wide open desert, 100 miles from where you started and the wrong trail will get you stranded while the right one will take you home.

Or what if your parter or friend is lost or worse injured and only has GPS coordinates to guide you to him?

Or what if you roll your rig, or break down and need a location to send for help.

I can keep going.

While I agree a compass is a very good tool to own, have in your rig, and know how to use (important), technology is here to stay and GPS Navigation is an invaluable tool in todays wheeling world.

I bought a Magellan just for what you described. Funny thing though on the 13th month of ownership (after the warranty expired) it did too. Wrote to the company and never received a response. Back to the bread crumbs I guess.

First and foremost (about the why) is...it's fun! I suppose dead reckoning is gratifying but the GPS units have so much in them to play with, and it is all about the toys..ain't it?  I have a Magellan Meridian, Garmin CSX60, and a Nuvi 650. I know, I know, but I use them all the time. I was out geocaching at a night cache, my flashlight died, backup flashlight died and the breadcrumb feature on the garmin lead me back to my TJ. I could have checked the moss on the trees and find my way, but this was easier.

I Got the Garmin Jeep Trail Guide on Ebay (for less then a TomTom) and I have to say it come in handy. I was a Boy Scout and even a Cub Scout so I know how to use a map and compass and I even can navigate on the water (live in Michigan lots of lake). I have to say it can be very difficult as a driver to drive and navigate, I don't multitask well, trying to drive the speed limit, keep the Jeep on the road, and watch all the other idiots on the road. I was wondering if anyone has the Topo maps for the Garmin Trail Guide. I'm willing to buy the DVD from anyone who has them.
