While this takes some work you can free yourself if you have a) a winch, or b) a hight lift jack and some chain/rope, or c) a come-along and a spare tire. Find an area within reach of the cable/rope/chain you have. Bury the spare tire with the above run through the center hole. Remove excess sand in front of tires and winch out. I buried a Blazer at the top of a sand bowl one night (couldn't back up and didn't want to-took numerous attempts to get this far) and this had me out in about 30 minutes.

Also carry a shovel and a couple strips of carpet.  Jack the vehicle up fill in the holes as much as possible and lay down the strips of carpet.  it will give you enough traction to get going.

Tie about 20' of 550 chord to each carpet strip so it drags along behind you until you find a good place to stop.  It beats the heck out of walking back to recover the carpet strips.

Good idea tieing the carpet to the Jeep!

try about ten or so pounds of air in all four tires and keep from getting stuck in the first place. if you still manage to get stuck, it's always better to get out and shovel before you sink it to the frame, and when you do get the sand cleared away and are going to to give it another go, try starting in a higher gear to get the tires to float instead of spinning and digging in.

I have found: to get out of a Sand Bog, is to pour water in the holes, wait till the water absorbs, then drive out.  The Water gives the sand a harder surface to drive on.  Warning:  This may not be so easy, in the Desert... to find water, that is.  It doesn't matter whether or not, you use hard or soft water. (grin).  Besides, don't drive on sand without deflating your tires to about 15 psi.  Another Warning:  Don't let too much air out when you drive on sand, because it takes a lot more power to torque the tires, in sand, than on harder surfaces and if you are driving a long distance on sand, your tires can get hot and allow the Bead to slip and break loose, thus giving you a flat tire, or more.  So, always carry an Air Pump in a Jeep.

Another "Trick" is to keep your speed up when driving in sand, and to be prepared to stop when you feel it bogging down, and backing out, as soon as possible without spinning the tires.  It also helps to keep from burying your Jeep if you have both front and rear "Lockers".  Four Wheel Drive isn't enough, as this really means you only have one wheel drive in the rear and one wheel drive in the front, if you have a "Standard" Four Wheel Drive.

If you drive in sand, do it right..... install front and rear;  "Lockers".
