Coil spacers or longer coils?

I've got a 97 Wrangler sport, and would like to start off with a small lift to improve the stance and allow plenty of room for 31x 10.5's.  The two kits I was looking into are the Explorer Pro Comp stage 1 2" lift, which provides longer coils, shocks, and bumpstops; and the Rubicon Express 2" budget boost-coil spacers.  Has anybody installed these kits?  How do they ride compared to stock?  I've many threads about gearing and such, so I would stick with the 3.07 ratio--if I were to go to 32 x 11.5's instead, should I go to 3.73 or 4.10's? Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

If you think that eventually you will move up to 32's, then by all means get a 4" lift kit. Spend the extra money for a complete kit with shocks, a dropped pitman arm, trackbar brackets and sway bar links. 3.07's will NOT pull this size tire regardless of which tranny you have. If it's a 4.0 auto 3.55's will do just fine and 3.73's for the 5 speed other wise you will never be able to use 5th gear. 4.10's in either case if you off road a lot.

Thanks for your replies.  At this point, I am planning for 31's, probably in the spring.  I know they will fit with the Jeep stock, with little or no rubbing, But I would like some more clearance--with a 1.5-2 inch lift.  It is currently my daily driver, and I do not want to do anything too drastic where major driveline issues would ensue.  I know the 3.07's can't handle too much, but I will not get into anything extreme, just the occasional offroading, whether its snow, dirt, or a little mud.  From what I have read and seen, the BFG A/T seems like a good all around tire, I'd go for the 31x10.50r15.  I am debating whether I should get the Rubicon Express BB, just to start things off, or if I should spend the extra $100 with the ProComp 2" to replace the 10 yr old coils, I've heard the ride is stiff with the Pro Comp.  Any opinions on a budget lift, ease of installation or the ride, would be appreciated.

The ride will be stiffer with new springs. Since it's a daily driver I would just go with the BB. Installation time with either is about the same because you will be removing and reinstalling the same parts. BB lifts are very inexpensive and will leave more moolah in your pocket. Take the money you save and add to it from time to time. By the time you wear out the 31's you should have enough for the bigger lift, gears and 32's.

Thanks JayDee, I was leaning towards the BB, I will purchase it soon.  I agree that it would be a good first step in building up my Jeep.  31's and RE BB 2" it is.

While there is nothing wrong with BB's or Coil Spacers, my personal opinion is that it is better to replace the old worn out spring than to just space it up. But that is just me.

So it's not a Jeep... sue me... it's still faster!

I appreciate your replies.  I do understand the benefits of a new coil, and I am still debating.  If I have the money, I will most likely opt for the procomp 2" coils, unless anybody can reccommend a comparably priced 2" coil kit that might have a better ride, I am open to suggestions.  The RE BB would retain the stock ride, for the most part, which I enjoy.  Any complaints about the BFG A/T KO (31") for daily driving duties/(light)mud performance ? (anything should be better than my futura adventurers)

The BFG AT is my favorite tire of all time. It will not let you down.

Can anybody confirm allegations that the Pro Comp stage I 2" lift is very stiff riding with the ES3000 shocks?  I have read many reviews which claim a harsh ride, very few of which fail to describe the ride as harsh.  Apparently the ES3000 shocks are bad (but the MX6's are $200 more).  In this case, I may be better off with the RE BB.  I would appreciate any opinions.

I've forgotten about the BDS 2" coil lift for TJ's.  ((Also, I know Rusty's has a 2" coil lift, but the shocks included seem cheap, and I have read that they rust easily)). BDS 2": From what I have read, they have been offered as alternatives to the Pro Comp 2" lift with the ES3000 shocks, the MX6 shock upgrade being too expensive.  Anybody run the Pro Comp 2" kit or the BDS 2" kit?

The BDS 2" kit replaces the coils and also comes with shocks.

The procomp 2" lift seems to work well, I installed it 3 weeks ago. It takes a couple of hours to put on(I pick up the jeep with a cherry picker instead of removing tires). Yes the ride is fairly stiff. If you could manage the coils and purchase a shock with softer valving it would be perfect. I have installed 255/85R16 (33X10.2 R/15")BFG MT/KM and am very happy with the ride. I run the tires at 22psi which puts even pressure across th whole foot print. I do not any rubbing issues as long as I leave the sway bar connected. With this set up the ride is a little softer than stock.
I also kept the es3000 shocks.
